Top 5 Ways to Prolong the Lifespan of Your Laser Welding Equipment

Time: 2025-07-26

For manufacturers pursuing high precision, efficiency, and long-term cost savings, investing in a fiber laser welding machine is a smart decision. Whether you're using the laser welding machine for metal processing or as a portable laser welder machine for on-site applications, proper maintenance and operation are essential to maximizing its lifespan.

Based on years of industry experience, Xianming Laser summarizes five key operational tips to help you extend your laser welding machine's life, reduce failure rates, and ensure long-term welding stability.

🔷 1. Store the Welding Gun Vertically to Prevent Lens Damage

The welding gun is one of the most frequently used and easily damaged parts of the machine, making proper storage extremely important.

Always store the gun vertically after use. Avoid placing the nozzle upward or leaving it lying flat.

Flat placement allows dust to enter through the nozzle and settle on internal lenses, potentially causing lens burning, poor focus, and operational issues.

Recommendation: Install a dedicated gun holder and avoid placing the gun on the ground or workbench.

🔷 2. Clean the Scale Tube Regularly to Prevent Slag Accumulation

During laser welding, the scale tube easily collects fine welding slag and smoke. Over time, this buildup can obstruct airflow and reduce welding precision.

Clean the scale tube every two days;

After each welding session, use a clean tissue to remove any slag inside the tube to prevent long-term buildup and blockage.

Tip: Use a soft, lint-free cloth or tissue to avoid scratching the tube.

🔷 3. Clean the Filter Regularly and Shield the Cooling Fan

Laser welding environments are typically hot and dusty, and cooling systems play a crucial role in protecting electrical and optical components.

Remove and clean the air filter regularly, clearing dust and metal particles;

Install a simple shield around the cooling fan to prevent large dust particles from entering the machine;

Ensure smooth airflow to extend the service life of the laser source and electronics.

🔷 4. Handle the Machine with Care During Movement

Whether it's a portable laser welding machine or a mobile laser welder, proper handling during transport is essential.

Never move the machine by pulling the welding cable or fiber wire;

Avoid shocks, collisions, or vibrations, especially at the optical connection points;

Use a wheeled cart or base to reduce manual handling risks and protect internal components.

🔷 5. Use Independent Grounding – Do Not Share Ground with TIG Welders

In many workshops, both laser welding machines and TIG welders are used simultaneously. However, the two have different electrical characteristics, and improper grounding can cause serious interference or even equipment failure.

Laser welding machines must be grounded independently. Do not share a ground wire with a TIG welder.

Shared grounding can result in control system malfunctions, laser source instability, or even motherboard burnout.

Recommendation: Plan your electrical layout in advance and ensure that each welding system has separate power and ground connections.

🔷 Conclusion

The stable operation of a laser welding machine depends not only on its build quality but also on how it's used and maintained. From proper gun storage to filter cleaning, careful handling, and correct electrical grounding — every detail affects the machine’s longevity and welding performance.
