You just replaced the protective lens yesterday. Today it burned again during piercing. You pull the drawer, and there it is—a tiny pit right in the center. That’s the third one this month.

Before you toss it, look at the burn pattern. At Xianming Laser, we always tell our customers that the burn pattern tells you exactly what’s wrong with your setup.

Center pit, pinhead size: Piercing spatter. This is the most common cause on any fiber laser cutting machine. Molten metal flies up through the nozzle and hits the lens. Check your piercing parameters. Switch from continuous-wave to pulse piercing. Increase piercing delay by 0.5s. Make sure the gas delay is not too short—if the laser fires before the gas, spatter goes straight to the lens. Also check nozzle wear and use a spatter-resistant coating.

Cloudy haze, no pit: Gas contamination. Water or oil in the assist gas condenses on the lens. The laser heats it, and the coating burns. Check your air dryer dew point. Replace filter elements on the air compressor and precision filters. If you use compressed air, dirty air will kill lenses fast.

Fingerprints or edge smudges: Installation contamination. Skin oils absorb laser energy and burn the coating. Always wear dust-free gloves or finger cots. Clean the new lens with alcohol and lint-free swabs. Never touch the surface.

Multiple small burns, off-center: Beam misalignment or scattering. Check the nozzle centering and the protective window seat. If the lens is not sitting flat, the beam can clip the edge.

Cracks with no burn: Mechanical stress or thermal shock. Check the spring seal and the drawer lock. Over-tightening or a damaged O-ring can cause leaks and pressure loss. If the head loses positive pressure, spatter enters.

A few quick checks:

  • Every shift: pull the lens and inspect against light. Replace if you see any burn spot, haze, or chip. Don’t keep using a damaged lens.

  • Every week: clean the protective lens. Check gas filters. Verify head positive pressure.

  • Every 2–3 months: inspect O-rings and seals. Replace if aged or deformed.

The bottom line: 95% of burned lenses are preventable. Look at the burn pattern, fix the root cause, and stop replacing lenses every week.

If you’ve checked piercing, gas quality, and installation, and the lens still burns, send your Raytools model, burn photos, cutting parameters, and maintenance log to our engineering team. We’ll help you diagnose the deeper issue.
